Dialup Support:

Is your dialup connection in need of help? If so, look here to get information on how to reconfigure your dialup connection

What You Need To Get Started:

  • A dial-up internet access account with Next Step Computing.

-If you do not already have an internet account, please contact us at 335-4800 to establish an account.

  • Your internet account UserName

-Your UserName was given to you at the time your account was created.

-If you do not remember your UserName, please contact us at 335-4800. For security purposes, you will be asked a few questions to verify your ownership of the account and then the information will be provided.

  • Your internet account Password

-You established your Password at the time your account was created.

-If you do not remember your Password, please contact us at 335-4800. For security purposes, you will be asked a few questions to verify your ownership of the account and then the information will be provided.

  • The dial-up internet access phone number for Next Step Computing

          -Select the phone number that is a local call for you location.

-To determine whether a phone number is a local call for your location, please refer to the Frontier Telephone Directory.

-In 'The Official 2001-2002 Rochester Southern Area Telephone Directory' for use through May 2002, the Local Calling Areas are listed on pages 4 & 5 near the front of the directory.

-Dial-up internet access phone number for Next Step Computing are as follows:

  •            Atlanta local calling area,    use 534-5485
  •            Dansville local calling area, use 335-4801
  •            Livonia local calling area,    use 346-0475

Creating The Connection:

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. Create the connection.

a)      Open the My Computer icon.

b)     Open the Dial-Up Networking icon (Windows 95 & 98) or click on the Dial-Up Networking link (Windows Me & 2000).

c)      Open the Make New Connection icon.

d)     If there is a Network Connection Wizard, follow instructions and enter the information below.

e)      Enter ‘NSCnet Dialup’ for the name of the computer you are dialing.

f)       Your modem should be already selected and appear as selected.

g)      Click Next.

h)      Enter the phone number for “NSCnet Dialup’. Please refer to the instructions above in ‘What You Need To Get Started’ to determine the appropriate local phone number for you to enter.

i)        Click Next.

j)       Click Finish.

NOTE: The NSCnet Dial-up icon is now in My Computer under Dialup Networking.

  1. Create a Desktop Shortcut icon.

a)      Highlight the NSCnet Dialup icon by clicking once on it with the right mouse button. A small menu should appear. Click once on Properties with the left mouse button.

b)     Choose the Server Type tab.

c)      The type of server should be PPP (Though it might also have a bunch of other options listed in it as well.)

d)     Uncheck everything except enable software compression and TCP/IP.

e)      Click OK.

f)       Once more click the NSCnet Dialup icon with the right mouse button. After the small menu appears, click on the Create Shortcut option.

g)      When prompted by the ‘cannot create shortcut here’ error message, just click on YES.

h)      Now close the Dial-Up Networking window and any other windows which may be open.

i)        You will now see a new icon on your desktop labeled, Shortcut to NSCnet Dialup.

 

NOTE: You are now ready to dial in to Next Step Computing (NSCnet) to access the Internet.

Connect to the Internet:

  1. Double-click on the desktop icon labeled Shortcut to NSCnet Dialup.
  2. Type in your UserName and Password.
  3. Click on the Connect button.

Once the dial-in connection is established, you are ready to open up Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc. and begin exploring the internet.
